"Old World Elegance and Superb Service"
We booked a three day stay in this fantastic hotel after finishing a River Cruise on the ss.River Queen - from Basel, Switzerland to Cologne, Germany. Our stay was Dec. 23, 24 and 25 - returning home on the 26th. The hotel was not busy, so they upgraded us to a suite - with a full live beautiful Christmas Tree! What a wonderful surprise - and a perfect place to entertain some family we saw there. The location is perfect - right across from the Dom and Christmas market. The service was outstanding; and the staff was extremely accomodating! Included in our rate was full use of sauna and steam facilities, full use of mini-bar at no cost, computers for your use and wonderful breakfast with very flaky croissants! Cologne was a delight with wonderful (but expensive) shopping and 5 Christmas markets. We enjoyed elegant Christmas Eve dinner in the hotel - and also enjoyed casual true German fare at "Fruh" with great Cologne beer!

"Excellent Service"
I was very pleased with my stay during Easter 2007. The service at the front desk was as usual excellent. My room was a good size and clean (I was upgraded as part of my membersip of Leading Hotels of the World). The staff in the Piano Bar were friendly and made some very good cocktails. The hotel's restaurant Hanse Stube served some very good food. Overall a good impression of my three day stay at the hotel, with the staff and attention to detail making all the difference.

"Classic Hotel"
We selected this hotel due to its' inclusion in the Leading Hotels of the World and it did not disappoint. Having read the reviews here, we found it odd and an "omen" that we were immediately offered Room 411 which we declined. The front desk staff were curious to know the reason and we informed them about the comments here. We were shown to a lovely junior suite on the fifth floor and despite a minor quibble with the position of the television (and rather ugly wires on display) the transition was seamless. The hotel is in a terrific location across from the cathedral and close to the river (Rhine cruise recommended); it has that understated elegance and superb discreet service which we could not fault. It has an old-world charm. Breakfast was small but the quality of produce was absolutely first rate and the tables well positioned (not cramped or close to fellow diners). It was raining when we left and they offered us both umbrellas to keep as souvenirs-a perfect end to a great weekend!
**Do not waste your time and money on the chocolate museum in the town, it is a total rip-off**

"Lovely Stay"
I stayed at the Hotel Ernst with my parents and my family on the 29th November. We had three deluxe rooms, which were all of a good standard. My youngest son's bed had a hotel Ernst toy rabbit on, for him to take home, and in the bathroom he had a small bath robe, slippers, wash bag with duck sponge and his own colourful bottles of shampoo and bubble bath.
The staff could not have been more attentive. The rooms were big, with nice bathrooms, two sinks, and a seperate toilet area. Bathrobe and slippers were supplied. The rooms are nice and warm, but if you get to hot at night it is quite noisy with the window open, although you would expect that as the hotel is centrally situated, opposite the Dom. Our three rooms opened out on to a nice indoor area with a fountain in the middle. We did not eat in the hotel, but the resturants did look very nice. The piano bar is a nice place to have a drink at the end of the night, with a man playing the piano. A very good hotel.

"Excellent Hotel, Great Location"
We stayed here from 3 to 5.12.05 while visiting the Christmas Markets. The Hotel location is excellent, a couple of minutes walk from the train station and across the road from the cathedral. It is close to everything we wanted to see. We had got excellent room only rates and were very happy with our standard room. It was a twin room, very spacious and facing an internal courtyard. The bathroom had shower over bath and twin sinks. The overall standard was excellent with the small exception that on the second morning we had to run the water for quite a while before it became hot enough to shower. The staff were excellent. The housekeeper showed us to our room on arrival. There was a turn down service in the evening. There were nice little complementary touches such as the free mini bar and the nightly shoe cleaning service. We did not eat there or use the other facilities as we were busy going round the markets but the central location made it an excellent base. I would highly recommend it for someone looking for a comfortable and traditional hotel in a fantastic location.
