"has a friendly and very helpful staff"
Nh Koln-city Hotel has a friendly and very helpful staff. Excellent food in the restaurant. Clean room, decent size.
The air conditioning in the room was noisy and couldn't be switched off (this was a shame because otherwise the hotel was lovely and quiet - I don't know if it was just a fault in our room).

"Service was great"
Nh Koln-city Hotel is neat and high quality. Rooms are huge and bathrooms are typical german: extremely clean and shining. Service was great. I'd come back to the same hotel anytime. Situation is 10 minutes walk south of the the old center; 20 minutes walk from the Dom, just in front of the Chocolate museum.

"Great hotel"
We booked this hotel via the internet. Wanting it as a base to visit the Cologne Christmas markets. It couldnt have been better. The service was first class. The room clean, warm and well kitted out (mini bar!). There is also a bar on the ground floor with a variety of beverages available. We ate in the restaurant on our first night and it was a very nice meal at a reasonable price. The chocolate factory across the road with its cafe was a good stopping point for a hot chocolate on the way to the various markets which tend to open about 11am. We missed out on the market at the chocolate factory as our stay in cologne was over by 1st December and the market opens on that day, however we found plenty to do for out 4 days and 3 nights amongst the other markets. There was even a Christmas "train" that ran between the markets incase your feet get too tired! We would return to this hotel and Cologne as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

"I could not find any fault with it!"
Although I have stayed in Cologne on a number of occasions this is the first time I have stayed at nH.
It is an excellent hotel for its range. The bedrooms were large, very well furnished and the bathroom (with a real bath! and a shower over the bath) kept very clean. A good supply of toiletries - including an emery board and comb for those who are keen on freebies! Staff were very helpful etc etc etc. Great place!
The buffet reakfast is excellent with a wide range of hot and cold food. The dining room is large, with smoking and non-smoking areas so usually there is little problem with finding a place.
The hotel also serves lunch and dinner, although I didn't try either. It also has room service for hot snacks and meals at very reasonable prices (didn't try that either!) I would expect the standard of preparation and presentation to be high.
Problems? One that could be important. Its location. It is next to the town side of the Severinsbrucke, facing the river, which is nice, and so opposite the sports and olympic museum and the chocolate museum. There is very little noise as the rooms are very well insulated - and air conditioned.
However, this location is very much at the south end of the city centre and you will need to walk quite a way to reach the main sites. The nearest tram stops and U-bahn are a walk too. There were some roadworks outside the hotel (in Feb 2007) and the early part of the walk is not very inspiring. I didn't find any nearby restaurants - or even cafes that I would want to eat at. There is a petrol station next door that has a good sized -shop - with snacks and a wide variety of beers, wines and spirits! It is near to one of the gay areas of Cologne, which will definitely be a plus for some clients.
It was also my first visit to the Cologne Carnival - this would need a review of its own! - fantastic! Think in terms of an office party in fancy dress that goes on for five days and nights - and you'll get the idea!
The hotel is so good I would definitely stay there again - and put up with the location.

"First Class"
On arriving at the hotel our first impression was, 'oh well a modern hotel next to a main road, at least we haven't spent a lot of money!' How wrong can you be!
From booking in to five days after getting home this hotel and it's staff rates as one of the friendliest, cleanest, value for money hotels we have stayed in.
The breakfast choice was excellent, the room was clean and plenty large enough, every member of staff was polite and friendly and the bar prices were very reasonable.
Despite it's location and the roadworks there was very little noise and we were never disturbed at any time.
My wife managed to leave her scarf in the hotel bar on our last night and after I e-mailed the hotel on our return home they located and sent the scarf to us within a few days.
Top place. I recommend it to anyone on a budget, visiting Cologne.
If you want to push me on a down side, it is a walk into the city centre (15 mins) and the air con was a little noisy (can be turned off). Otherwise brilliant.

"Very clean and pleasant hotel!"
After a long journey of about 8 hours across Germany, we spotted the NH sign from the main Cologne motorway (great marketing idea!), so extremely tired we decided to pull up to look for a room for 1 night. It was very busy as there was an International Trade Faire taking place, but we were lucky and got a room. It felt extremely pleasant to enter a nice, clean room with a spotless bathroom and lovely views of the river and the old Cathedral. The bed was comfortable and the windows were soundproof, so we could take uninterrupted rest.
The buffet breakfast in the morning was exceptional and a nice treat! Shame we didn't get a chance to experience the hotel wellness centre...
I would definitely go back again and I think this hotel deserves 4* rating.
