"Excellent hotel despite being a bit out of town....."
Getting a good value hotel in Koln is not always easy especially when there is a Fair on. My usual hotel was full so I booked the Dorint Novotel after recommendations on Tripadvisor = and I wasn't disappointed. Not the easiest place to find by public transport = trams stop 5-10 min walk away and a good 15 min from the centre of town. Located on a busy road alongside the Rhine and looking nothing special from the outside.
However, once inside I was impressed. Big airy modern lobby, very efficient reception, free internet access, large restaurant/breakfast room. The rooms are large (non smoking available) with a double bed and settee, TV, mini bar (first drink free), decent sized bathroom (a bit plasticy typical Accor hotels fittings but perfectly acceptable). Superb breakfast (expensive at 15 EUR) but included in my rate. I wouldn't fancy paying the rack rate of 120 EUR without breakfast but I paid 71 EUR inc breakfast and was perfectly satisfied. Note that the hotel itself offers a rate of 65 EUR on Sunday nights. A good hotel if you can get a decent rate. Highly recommended.

"Great family hotel"
We selected this hotel because:
1.They could 2 adults and 2 children in one room,
2.Their rates were reasonable
3.They had received good reviews at Tripadvisor
We were not disappointed at all. The hotel is clean, the staff is very friendly, and they have a convenient parking garage. We will surely stay here again.

"Excellent Hotel"
We stayed at this Dorint Novotel in September 2006 and had a great experience. We were travelling with two children and were provided with a large room with children's beds laid out very nicely. The lobby is very nice with free internet PC available. The front desk staff and the restaurant staff were very friendly and spoke very good english. This hotel is not very far from the cathedral and one could easily walk there.

"Very clean and friendly!"
Stayed here one night based on reviews from this site. Basically found it to be just as everyone said. The staff was very helpful and friendly, the rooms were a good size and extremely clean, and it wasn't super close to all the attractions, but it was a walkable distance (maybe 20-25 minute walk). In fact, we lucked out because there happened to be a little tram that was making the rounds to all the Christmas markets and one of the stops was at the market just outside the Chocolate Museum -- which is only about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. (cool museum, by the way!)
Can't comment on the breakfast, as it was 15 euro (about $18) per person for the buffet and our group opted not to eat at the hotel. I guess that is the one thing that would have made our stay better - if breakfast had been included.
I appreciated the fact that they had a private parking garage under the hotel, and it was well worth the charge. They even let us stay parked there after we had checked out so we could walk downtown again without having to take our car along. I think the parking fee was only about 10 euro total (we were parked for a full 24 hours).
**A suggestion for those who are thinking of booking a room...the hotel faces the river, but the street that runs along the river is currently under construction, and is a busy street - you might want to request a room on the other side of the hotel if you want quiet (or a nicer view). Our room was facing a courtyard and it was extremely quiet!**

"Kolncity Novotel"
The Cologne City Novotel situated on Bayerstrasse on the bank of the Rhine is an excellant hotel for those who require a cheap reasonable place for the family to stay.I have just returned after staying therewith my family 7/1/05 to 10/01/05 in a family room at a cost of 50 euros a night for the room.
The room was large with a sofa whichconverted into two standard sized single beds and the bathroom although small with a small bath and shower was quite ample. There are no tea or coffee making facilities available (we took our own travel) but there is a fridge and minibar where one drink is free ie the warsteiner beer which would cost 2.3 euros. There ia also a tv with cnn and bbc world.
Our room had a view of the Rhine through a small window and a larger side window.Breakfasts could be ordered at a cost of 15 euros per adult and freee for children under 16 however we chose to eat in manyof the local bakeries where onecould have a coffee and wonderfulpastry for two euros.
Finally the hotelhas a few exercise machines and a sauna. MENTION MUST ALSO BE MADE OF THE HELPFUL DESK STAFF WHO SPOKE GOOD ENGLISH.The DESK also has a supply of fresh apples on hand for guests.

"Favourite Hotel in Koeln"
Our favourite Koeln hotel because of the efficient staff, large clean rooms and good location. The upper floor rooms with a Rhine view are the best, but all the rooms are of a standard size with a double bed and sofa. Room rates at weekend are good at 65 euros, room only, but they are often much higher due to messe. If you are prepared to prepay, they can be cheaper.
Breakfast is large, but when the cost is seperate from the room rate, at 15 euros, I am always undecided as to whether I can eat to the price!
About 15 minutes walk to the centre and, on the way, you pass 2 very good restaurants: the Hexenhaus, a Dalmatian restaurant just up a side street and, on the main road a Bavarian gaststatte with a pleasant outdoor patio and large German portions.
